Abolishing of the UPSR and PMR Exams

There has been a lot of talk on abolishing the UPSR and PMR exams. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this was part oaf government efforts to restructure the learning system that as seen as too examination oriented and failed to provide a students. "With only one public examination, the teachers and students can focus on improving creativity, interactive and co-curricular activities and sports," he said.

Well, first and formost the Ministry should look into the grievances of the students. Some schools are so gain on seeing their schools as top schools, that they neglect the weak students and focus on the bright ones. These bright students are given tuition in various subjects whereas the weak ones are ignored. So while the ' smart get smarter' and the 'weak get weaker'.

The way to overcome this problem is to monitor the child's progress throughout the school years. Then again, the teachers must not be bias or show favourtism to certain students. But over the years, Malaysians become more concerned on results and strict measures of success using revered-but-feared grading systems. Schools as well as the students were measured by on the number of A's the students obtain.

Today, we see students who have difficulty in analyzing, synthesizing, evaluating and generalizing subject matter. Therefore, subjects like history and geography should be optional because it's just depends on how good is the student's memory. These subjects are for people who have an interest in them. They can't be forced upon someone.

Masidi, who is Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, told Bernama: "We need to look seriously (into the matter) and analyse our entire education system to find the strengths and weaknesses so that we are in a better position to determine the correct direction of changes and innovation, and vocational marketability is just one issue. Education Minister have to be firm in implementing what is best for all the children of Malysia and not be afraid to make changes due to political pressure.

  1. I totally agree with the statement saying "Smarter gets smarter and Weaker gets weaker" in secondary schools especially.I am saying this because I have experienced this in my Secondary school. The smart ones are saturated in the first class and the moderate ones gets into the other classes. So there is no improvement for the weaker ones and they are left behind. After all, nowadays its all about the number of 'A's one produces.

  2. Hi, agree that the smarter one's become more smarter and the weaker one's become more weaker. It is unfair because I beleive that every child has potential in them and every child deserves a chance to exploit their potential. To assist them ,teachers as well as parents should encourage them and help them to overcome their weakness but at the same time not neglecting the smart one's.Smart students also should play their part in educating the weak one's .By this,I strongly believe that the weak one can eventually be transformed into the smarter one .

  3. In that case, teachers ,society and parents should not judge the intelligence of a student by just looking at the number of "A's" instead know the students true quality, weaknesses and strengths and encourage them to improve themselves and then I'm pretty sure they can ace in their examinations.

  4. I agree to your statement where the smarter students are given more oppurtunities to improve themselves with special classes and so on while the weaker ones are not given that much of an attention. This is just not fair if you ask me , I think that all students should have the potential to shine and excel, and they should be given the chance to do so.Finally no favoritisms should be show but every students should be treated equally.

  5. In my opinion abolishing UPSR and PMR exams is just unacceptable, Exams and practical works like assignments are both equally important in monitoring the students improvement as well as grading their achievements, abolishing either of this is not a good idea if you ask me

  7. The statement " With only one public examination, the teachers and students can focus on improving creativity, interactive and co-curricular activities and sports," can be also questioned, In my opinion. the new system "PBS", where students involved will have exams everyday is not only stressful but some students take the easy way and copy from textbooks and other students. There is no creativity involved as teacher just give them work to do .This is not the way of learning. Moreover, students also have the laid-back attitude as they don't feel the need to study as there is no public exam. Therefore, the UPSR and PMR examinations should be carried on with a few modifications.

  8. i agree with your statement! but by abokishing pmr and upsr wil make things worst! the kids wil not concentrate in class...and they'll be more playfull. because they dont have to sit for major exams.

  9. I agree with you. If we abolish UPSR and PMR, level of education in Malaysia will drop in my point of view. More stress will be put on the students. This is just a disaster!

  10. I strongly agree with your statement where smart students get smarter whereas weak students get weaker. This mostly can be seen in top schools as high performance schools. As you said,i agree with your suggestion to overcome this problem that is to monitor all the students regardless of their performance in their studies.Good job..A very nice topic for the current state of our country's educatioon system.
