Towards the People's Prosperity

During Raya time, as our Muslim friends fast through the holy month Ramadhan, we head to the festive period filled with eager anticipation. For most, it would be a joyous time of reunion with loved ones, especially those who moved out of their hometowns for better pastures in the cities.

However, for some families, things will not be going as planned. Despite the authorities' best efforts at organizing campaigns like Ops Sikap, the festive period invariably coincides with a sharp rise in the number of (reported) accident cases. Over the years, fortunes have been spent on educating the masses on proper road etiquette with little success.

The figures make for disappointing reading. Our roads kill, on average, 18 people a day. The implementation of Ops Sikap brings the figure down to 15. Think of it this way, the H1N1 outbreak, for all the panic it has been causing, is far less lethal. Your odds of emerging unscathed from a bout of H1N1 are actually very promising, but you can't say the same of a severe road accident. Yet, the bizarre reality is that people are more ready to don face masks than wear safety belts.

Earlier today, the Ministry of Works, with the support of Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR), Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM), and 26 tolled highway concessionaires, has launched the C.A.R.E. road safety program with the intent of slashing the number of road accidents nationwide  to achieve this objective by attempting to cultivate safe and responsible driving as a Malaysian way of life.

Officiating the campaign's launch was Works Minister, Dato' Shaziman Abu Mansor, who unveiled the campaign's logo at a ceremony held at the PLUS North Bound R&R stop at Dengkil. The implementation of C.A.R.E, which stands for C - Courteous, A - Attitude, R - Responsible, E - Etiquette, is a key component in the Works Ministry's KPI to arrest the alarming trend of our country's accident rates.

All of these helps in the Ministry of work. Thus, campaigns and such events will be effective to make Malaysia a better place to live for Malaysia.

  1. I do agree with your article. As we can observed now that the road accidents cases are increasing recently especially during festival. Therefore, I agree with the program that you suggest.
