Medical Degree : A Dream or Nightmare ??

Over the last 15-20 years, Malaysia had the highest number of NEW medical schools in the world. Anyone can open a medical school in a shop lot as long as they have the right connection. In fact, Our country has the highest number of medical schools per capita population in the world currently. In fact, the medical school can enrol students even before MMC gives its accreditation and many parents are not aware of this.  The sudden mushrooming of medical schools over the past 10 years has resulted in a shortage of qualified and experienced lecturers to accommodate the increasing number of medical students.

Our society is so obsessed in making their children a doctor by hook or crook. There used to be a saying that “you throw a stone, you will hit a lawyer” but soon the same can be said for doctors. Many still believe that being a doctor guarantees their children’s future but I it doesn't. Many of the young students are totally unaware what is in store for them when they decide to do medicine. They still think that their job is guaranteed with good money. They still think they can work anywhere in the world by just having any MBBS degree. They got no clue regarding the fact that in medicine, your degree needs to be recognised by the respective country’s medical council in order for you to be able to work there. Almost all our medical colleges are not recognised overseas (except UM/UKM being recognised in Singapore and Monash in N.Zealand/ Australia), if you are jobless in Malaysia, you would not be able to find a job anywhere else unless you sit and pass their respective medical council’s entrance exams.

Will doctors become jobless in near future? The answer is YES. Currently, MOH is struggling to place new graduates for housemanship training and they seem to be opening more and more district hospitals for training purposes. What type of training can these district hospitals with no sub specialty units provide? Some hospitals are overcrowded with housemen and they are not learning much. These poorly trained souls are then released into the community, coupled with some poor attitude and snobbishness; they seem to be having a license to kill! God save the country. The good ones get frustrated and leave to private sector, not to say there is a lot of money in private sector as well. The competition is getting so great that the incomes of doctors are gradually dropping year by year.

Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) should seriously look into this issue. Inadequate training for medical students who may not be exposed to the spectrum of diseases and disorders will put the lives of patients in danger. At the same time, it is also important to ensure that entry requirements into medical schools meet the required standards so that only eligible students gets the chance to study medicine. The ministry also should stop approving any more medical schools and approved medical schools should be strictly monitored by MOHE.  Medicine is not a profession to earn money but it is a contribution towards creating a better nation. Be THE DOCTOR not A DOCTOR! :-)

  2. It is indeed true that many medical students often find themselves jobless after graduating. This is because there is no limitation for the number of medical universities being opened up in our country. I second your opinion. MOHE should take action. Great job, Sara!

  3. Hi,in my opinion I agree that doctors can become jobless in near future.I feel that the society need to be taught that there are better jobs than just being a doctor. We should not think that being a doctor is the best because not all doctors are very good instead it puts alot of burden especially to those pupils that have been forced to do medicine by their own parents because they think it is the best. However, they should keep an open mind and allow their children to indulge themselves in whatever that catch their interest and encourage them to fullfill their dreams.A very good article indeed, job well done:)

  6. That really a good facts about the medical degree in Malaysia now a day. But the action from government were increasing the numbers of hospital. Besides that, the government also allow the medical students from oversea that without being recognized by Malaysia to take the entrance exam so that they can work in hospital in Malaysia. This action only will increasing the population of medical students. So can I know what is the suitable way to solve this problem?

  7. Great article! This had really opened my eyes broad enough.I agree with your point that certain parents are really pushing their child to become a doctor in his/her future and also added by the influence of relatives and society, parents are saving almost every single penny to give support their children's education in becoming doctor. At the end, either the child doesnt want to study and wastes their parents money or the college or respective firm eats up the money, gives the student the certificate but at the end the cert is not recognized.

    2. Thanks Narein! I'm glad that you agree with my point of view. I'm not against choosing medicine as a career. I have a huge respect for the profession and I think those who really have the passion and interest should go for the career instead of seeing the medical profession as a way to earn a lot of money.

  8. You did a great job. I agree with your article. teenagers should choose other fields other than medical field. Doctors will be overloaded in future. But for now most of the students already finished their medicine and are jobless. Are you have any other suggestion to overcome for the students that alreay finished their course and jobless?

    1. Thank you. Government are trying to increase the number of district hospitals so that freshly graduated doctors can be placed there. However, these districts hospitals do not provide an adequate environment for training purposes. Moreover, MMC have reduced the compulsory service year in government sector so that new and more doctors can be absorbed in.

  9. Dilip:i agree with your contents.Nowadays students prefer to complete their studies as fast as possible and get graduated. This is not the way actually, according to your statements i do agree that only degree that is recognized will be accepted in overseas and even Malaysia. They don't randomly pick medical students who does not have proper degree just to fill up their hospitals.According to your second point, i agree with you that more medical students will be jobless soon and i would like to highlight this point to the young generations to choose their occupation wisely. This is not the matter of earning good money,it is the matter of you being jobless or not.

    1. Thanks Dilip. Exactly!. Students have to be really sure about the course recognition before enrolling in any institution offering medicine. Increasing number of institution and increasing number of students will definitely cause a heavy competition for job placement in future

  10. I totally agree with you. Many medical students out there are doing it for the $$ only. Besides that, it is their parents dream for them to be a doctor not their own ambition. This should be changed or else there will be many unemployed doctors in the future in Malaysia.
